The Cologne based artist and author adores the years 1900, 1913, 1977 and 1982. His work is full of references on old child books and futuristic manifestos and as much about escapism as it is about time diagnosis. Richter was a steady contributor to the fashion magazine Mode Depesche and writes regulary for „Art Blog Cologne“ and „Kaput – Magazin für Insolvenz & Pop“.
Claus Richter is first of all a fan and from that fandom he develops his very own artistic language. A process you will be able to understand more deeply by reading his writings, in which he leads us by the hand to the wonderland of his inspiration.

Of course curiosity is also about danger and risk. Richter’s latest exhibition “Salve Monstrum” shows his ambition widening to fully-fledged filmmaking and his first long-form movie (very much the next logical step after his recent puppet plays). It’s a 20-minute long musical, staged in the Renaissance-era-Schloss Heiligenberg castle and the forest around, a film that is all about stage designs, costumes (from Snow White garments to tall cylindrical hats) and plenty of eccentric characters.
No spoilers, but it’s safe to say the following all feature: a dandyish king, an angry robber and a lot of sexy sidekicks dancing around a flamboyant and decadent set, somehow mashing up Les Ballet Russes, traditional fairy tales and contemporary hiphop. There are some pretty solid rumors that the American artist Ryan McLaughlin took part, as well as Alexander Wilhelmi and artist Carina Brandes – all caught on camera by Frankfurt based filmmaker Bernd Thiele.
As a long time follower and passionate fan of pop and hiphop, Claus Richter was also up for the challenge of penning his own soundtrack – and that’s what you’ll find at the centre of this new Edition Fieber release: nine little pop songs, each one shining bright and full of the desire to either make you dance or leave you crying on your bed.
It all starts with ”Verfolgung”, an uneasy number, combining broken hiphop-beats and the staccato feel of dance music, which poses the mother of all questions: “Are You Ready For This?”
On the following eight tracks, Richter speaks, sings and raps with such different voices like the one of the Räuber (Thieve) and the König (King) and in different moods (from sentimental to flirty, from ambient to dancey), before he says goodbye with the wonderful electro-piano song “Enthebung”.

It was through the kind introduction of artist Sarah Szczesny that we met Claus Richter for the first time. And it was a true love at first sight – but then you’d have to be positively cold-blooded not to be charmed by this warm, friendly and truly open-minded artist.
